FORT WAYNE, Ind. - A 2018 Fort Madison High School graduate earned a gold medal Wednesday at the junior national paralympic competitions in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

Caleb Gehle, 18, of Fort Madison won the gold medal in the shot put at the Adaptive USA Junior Nationals on Wednesday morning. Then, after winning gold, Gehle went on to earn silver in the discus and in the javelin competitions.

The Fort Wayne event is the national paralympic competition for people under 23 and he earned the trip when he qualified in Indiana in April. In 2017 he went to Middleton, Wis., for the same event.

He will be racing in the 200-meter wheelchair race on Thursday and will finish up his events on Friday when he will race in the 100-meter and 400-meter chair races.

In an unexpected turn of events, Gehle met up with a group of racers from Minnesota who asked him to compete with them in the 4x100 meter relay. So Gehle will be competing in that event on Friday as well.

Gehle competed in several events at the State Track meet in Des Moines this year, including a 5th-place finish in the shot put and sixth place finishes in three wheel chair races.

After a short return trip home, Gehle and his family will be headed to Barcelona, Spain where he will compete in the Cerebral Palsy World Games from Aug. 5th-12th.

The Pen City Current will have a full recap of Gehle's performance for the week when the junior nationals conclude on Friday.
