Wednesday chase lands FM man in jail

FORT MADISON - A vehicle chase Wednesday night ended with a collision on Avenue E and a Fort Madison man in custody.

According to a press release from the Fort Madison Police Department at approximately 9:00 p.m. officers were dispatched to a call of a person possibly urinating in the 700 block of 27th St. The suspect then allegedly left the area in a dark colored car. At approximately 9:10 p.m. officers observed what they thought was this vehicle in the 2000 block of Ave. G driving erratically and attempted to stop the vehicle and it took off leading to a pursuit.

The vehicle a 2018, black, Chevrolet Camaro crashed into two parked cars at 13th Street and Avenue E before coming to a stop. The driver of the vehicle was identified as Miguel Alvarez, 25, of Fort Madison. Alvarez is alleged to have started a fight with several members of the Fort Madison Police department while being taken into custody. He was tended to by Lee County Ambulance and then turned over to officers at the scene. Alvarez was charged with numerous offenses and taken to the Lee County Jail for initial appearances.

He was charged with operating a motor vehicle without the owner’s consent, an aggravated misdemeanor; eluding a law enforcement officer, a Class D Felony; operating while intoxicated 1st offense, a serious misdemeanor; 2 counts of assault on a police officer, a serious misdemeanor; 2 counts of possession of a controlled substance, a serious misdemeanor; possession of drug paraphernalia, a simple misdemeanor; and six traffic violations.
