Hound spikers finish 7th at Bondurant tourney

BONDURANT - The Fort Madison Lady Hounds volleyball team took 7th place out of 16 teams at this weekend's ballyhooed Skip Anderson Classic in Bondurant-Farrar High School.

The Hounds opened the tournament with a 23-21 win over Class 4A 8th-ranked Waverly Shell Rock, but then dropped the next two sets 8-21 and 13-15. It was the only set Waverly would give up during the tournament.

Fort Madison then knocked off Pella Christian 23-21, 21-15 and Perry 21-7, 19-21, 15-10.

The Hounds also beat Carroll 21-16, 17-21 and 15-13.

The other two losses came to Class 4A 5th-ranked Pella 21-15, 21-15 and to Class 2A 6th-ranked Sidney 21-15, 21-15.

Fort Madison started the season ranked 15th in the state in Class 4A. Southeast Conference foe Fairfield is ranked 13th.

On the day Junior Jillian Wiseman had 40 kills and five blocks to lead Fort Madison at the net. Senior Kaeli Hutson had 36 kills to go with 58 digs and served a perfect 47-47 with three aces.

Senior Josie Pumphrey led the Hounds with 100 digs on the day and aces with 14. She went 47-53 from the service line. Sophomore Lauren Bailey had 114 assists for Fort Madison and served a perfect 40-40 with seven aces.

The Hounds open the home season Tuesday night at the Hound Dome in a 9/JV/Varsity stint beginning at 5:45.
