Holy Trinity stays perfect at Keokuk Invitational

KEOKUK - The Holy Trinity volleyball team breezed through the Keokuk Invitational tournament Saturday without dropping a set.

The Crusaders, ranked 4th in Class 1A in the Iowa High School Girls Athletic Union's Sept. 13 rankings, have not dropped a set all year.

At Saturday's tourney, the closest any school would get was Central Lee who put up 18 in a third-round loss to Holy Trinity 21-18, 21-15.

HTC dispatched Columbus 21-14, 21-15 in the first round, and the rolled over Burlington Notre Dame 21-4, 21-8 before downing the Hawks.

In the championship bracket, New London and the Crusaders squared off for the second time this year. HTC swept the Lady Tigers in three sets at home on Monday and won again on Saturday in two sets 21-16, 21-16.

On the day, senior Eryn Anderson was 36-37 attacking with 13 kills and was also a stellar 38-40 from the service line with nine aces. 2017 first-team, all-stater Emily Box led the Crusaders at the net with 39 kills on 63-71 attacking. She also threw up nine blocks on the day. Sophomore Claire Pothitakis was 32-37 at the net with 10 kills. Freshman Kassi Randolph had 37 assists and Bailey Hellweg had 31 assists.

Junior Maille Sheerin went 33 of 34 from the service line with five aces and 21 digs. Senior Elyse Pothitakis led the team with 26 digs from her libero position.

The Crusaders host the Holy Trinity Classic on Monday starting at 4 p.m. at Shottenkirk Gymnasium. Some of the teams at the classic include Winfield-Mt.Union, Danville, Mt. Pleasant, Fort Madison, Central Lee and Wapello. Fort Madison is rated in the top 15 in Class 3A in the state.

Box is currently fifth in the state in all classes with a 5.15 kills per set average. That number is tops in Class 1A.
