Hellige takes 3rd at conference cross-country meet

COLUMBUS JUNCTION - Holy Trinity Catholic junior Matt Hellige took third place at the Southeast Iowa Superconference Cross Country meet Thursday in Columbus Junction.

Hellige, who's currently ranked 26th in the state in Class 1A finished with a time of 17:40.7, 8.7 seconds from second place at 22 seconds off the pace set by Pekin's Colton Glosser. Pekin's Brady Millikin took 2nd at the meet.

Peking won the team event with 45 points. Holy Trinity took 5th with 158. HTC junior Jacob Mohrfeld finished 17th at the event with a time of 19:12.2. Mitchel Pothitakis, just a freshman, took 45th overall and 43rd scoring with a time of 20:34.8. The other two scoring runners for the Crusaders were senior Brant Holtkamp at 45th with a time of 20:39.1 and Chandler Rung at 20:56.3 good enough for 50th.

Other finishers from HTC included Adam Rauenbuehler with a time of 21:20.0, and Sam Avery at 21:52.6.

In the boys junior varsity run, Michael and Wyatt Hellman finished 13th and 14th respectively with time of 22:25.2 and 23:21.9. Senior Josh Barr took 16th at 23:55.9.

In the junior high run, the boys took 7th. Jacob Pothitakis led the way with a 3rd at 11:13.8, just 13 seconds off the pace set by Lucas Gerst of Wapello. Jace Figueroa of West Burlington-Notre Dame was second. Nick Fullenkamp was 19th with a time of 12:32.0 and Sheldon Kruse was right on Fullenkamp's heals with a 12:32.9. Maddex Rung and Connor Gehling rounded out the scoring with finishing 52nd and 53 with 16:37.9 and 16:41.8.

For the girls in the junior high run, Holy Trinity's Mary Hellige took 28th with a time of 15:25.2 and Eliot Dostalek was right behind in 34th with a time of 15:53.8.
