Keokuk police arrest two connected to 2016 shooting

KEOKUK - Keokuk authorities have arrested two Keokuk men in connection with a 2016 shooting on Belknap Place in the city.

The Keokuk Police Department released the arrest of Matthew Cameron Crews, age 28, of Keokuk, on Oct. 12th, 2018 at 4:33 p.m., in the 1200 block of Exchange. Crews is charged with Attempted Murder, Burglary 1st Degree, Robbery 1st Degree, and two counts of animal abuse. He was taken to the Lee County Correctional Center.

Crews' arraignment is set for Nov. 5th at 8 a.m. at the South Lee County Courthouse. He is being held on a $1M cash only bond. Keokuk attorney Curt Dial has been appointed to represent Crews.

CREWS

On October 16, 2018 at 3:13 p.m., the Keokuk Police Department arrested Drake Dalton Woods, age 25 of rural Keokuk, in the 3400 block of 276th Ave. Woods is charged with Aiding and Abetting Robbery 1st Degree and, Aiding and Abetting Burglary 1st Degree. He was taken to the Lee County Correctional Center.

Woods' is being held on a $25,000 cash only bond and his arraignment is set for Oct. 26 at 11 a.m.

The arrest of Crews and Woods stems from an investigation into a shooting that happened at 300 Belknap Place, on Jan. 7th, 2016 at around 1 a.m. Officers found a 31-year-old male and two dogs with gunshot wounds at the scene.

Assisting the Keokuk Police Department in the investigation was the Lee County Attorney’s Office, Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, Lee

County Sheriff’s Department, Lee County Narcotics Task Force, Hamilton Police Department and, Keokuk Animal Services.

A criminal charge is merely an accusation and a defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
