FORT MADISON - Hundreds of area residents packed into Shottenkirk Gymnasium Sunday morning for the second day of God's Portion Day, Holy Family Parish's largest fundraiser of the year.

Not only were bidders in an open auction able to bid on Bloody Mary's and Mimosa's to sip on during the auction, but there were also tickets for the upcoming Holy Trinity Dinner Theater, pizzas, bicycles, fresh fruit, and big ticket items like Cardinals and Cubs tickets, a backyard patio makeover and even a tricked out golf cart with a back seat and stereo, were set to be auctioned later in the day.

Silent auction bids were taking place on the other side of the gymnasium and the regular auction was taking place. Outside a "Driven to Give" event was held with donations coming for each test drive.

A steering committee of eleven started meeting in February putting together the annual weekend-long auction that raised almost $250,000 in 2017 for the Holy Family Parish.

Matt Krogmeier, chairman of this year's God Portion Day committee said the attendance has been strong for this year's event, with the auction running until almost 11 p.m. Saturday night. On Sunday, Corey Fraise, with Fraise Real Estate & Auction, called out bids and bidders beginning at noon and then turned things over to his father Dan Fraise at about 1:30. Students and volunteers alike brought up goods to the auction stand.

'It's been a good year," Krogmeier said. "But there's still some great items to be auctioned off yet tonight. We got a really nice golf cart donated from Randolph Dentistry and we have a backyard makeover that we think will be one of the biggest sellers."

He said the auction will probably run until 7 or 8 p.m. Sunday.

This is Krogmeier and his wife Lindsey's third year on the committee.

"The first year you just kind of learn how it all works," he said. "The second year you help build the event and the third year we became chairman."

He said the committee doesn't really set monetary goals each year other than to surpass the previous year's number, which we leave the committee hoping to raise a quarter of a million during the Saturday-Sunday event this year.
