Danville knocks down HTC boys in opener

DANVILLE - Junior Matt Hellige scored 14 to lead the Holy Trinity Catholic boys basketball team in a 68-51 loss to Danville Monday night to open regular season play for both teams.

The Crusaders got in a hole early on the road when they couldn't get a basket to drop until a minute left in the first quarter and trailed 14-4 going into the second period. Only Hellige and senior Kyle Bredemeyer would convert buckets in the first quarter for HTC.

The game was competitive the rest of the way as the lid came off in the second period and HTC scored 16 with seniors Brant Holtkamp and Adam Rauenbuehler, and junior Reed Fehseke all getting in on the scoring action. Danville pushed the lead to 15 with a 25-10 lead with five minutes remaining in the second period and the Crusaders were only able to nibble away at the deficit through the second period trailing 33-20 at the end of the half.

Danville continued to extend the lead in the third period and led by as many as 25 at 50-25, until, with just under a minute remaining, HTC went on a 9-2 run to close to gap to 18 going into the final period. HTC would could only muster a 17-16 fourth quarter advantage allowing Danville to get the win.

Hellige was the only player for Holy Trinity in double figures. Junior Quentin Schneider finished with eight points, all in the second half including 6 of 10 from the free throw line. Fesheke and Bredemeyer each finished with seven points. Holtkamp added six. Rauenbuehler had five and junior Blake Crabtree had four to round out the scoring for HTC. The Bears' Max Wilcox led all scorers with 20 on the night.

The Crusaders (0-1) travel to Highland Thursday night before opening the home season Saturday against Mediapolis.
