Paul J. “Bart” Bartholomew, 86, of Fort Madison, IA, passed away at 5:20 p.m. on Tuesday, November 27, 2018 at River Hills Village in Keokuk, IA surrounded by his family. He was born on July 31, 1932 in Keokuk, IA to Edmund LeRoy & Helen White Bartholomew. He married Joan Marilyn Beger on January 22, 1955 in Nauvoo, IL. She preceded him in death on November 21, 2004. Bart served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and received his Masters Degree in Criminology from St. Ambrose University. He retired as a

Captain from the Fort Madison Police Department in 1995, with 42 years of service to the community. He was a member of Ss. Mary & Joseph Church, Fort Madison Elks Lodge, Knights of Columbus, Kiwanis Club and the Iowa Crime Victim Prevention Association. He was involved for bringing the D.A.R.E. Program and McGruff the Crime Dog to Iowa. He gave numerous drug education talks across the state of Iowa to school children. He was the first narcotics officer in Lee County and one of the first crime scene investigators in Lee County. He enjoyed woodworking, hunting, fishing, gardening and was an avid outdoorsman. He was also a scout leader for Pack 42 in Fort Madison.

Bart is survived by: 3-sons: Rodney Bartholomew of Denmark, IA, Robert Bartholomew of Fort Madison, IA & Edmund (Kay) Bartholomew of Montrose, IA; 2-daughters: Cathy Grim of Tucson, AZ & Susan (Ray) Menke of Fort Madison, IA; 8-grandchildren; 3-great grandchildren; 1-brother: Joe (Kathy) Bartholomew of Warsaw, IL & 1-sister: Susan (Ray) Dahlman of Pleasant Hill, IA. He was preceded in death by: his parents, wife & 1-son in law: Ron Grim.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of King-Lynk Funeral Home & Crematory. Friends may call after 2:00 p.m. on Monday, December 3, 2018 with the family to receive friends from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. with a rosary to be recited at 6:30 p.m. on Monday evening at King-Lynk Funeral Home & Crematory. A memorial mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, December 4, 2018 at Ss. Mary & Joseph Church with Rev. Mark P. Spring officiating. Burial will be held at Soldiers’ Circle in Oakland Cemetery.
