Schmitz-Banks & Beals Funeral Home obituary – Jean Starr, 77, Powellton, Illinois

Jean Starr, 77, of the Suburbs of Powellton, Illinois, passed away at 10:29 p.m. Thursday, December 13, 2018, at her home.

Born October 29,1941, in Burnside, Illinois, the oldest daughter of James Milton and Elizabeth Anne (Harman) Carter. On August 10, 1960, in Oceanside, California, she married the love of her life, Richard Starr. He preceded her in death on August 24, 2000.

Survivors include one daughter: Sandy (Doug) Stevenson of Nauvoo; one son: Steve (Tammy) Starr of St. Louis, Missouri; four grandchildren: Amanda (Ryan) Stevenson-Cosgrove, Jacob Stevenson, Steven Starr II and Jennifer Starr; two step-grandchildren: Joshua (Kris) James and Shayla (Darien) Whitley; four step great grandchildren: Bella, Dayva, Brier and Graylynn; two sisters: Marlene Rambo and Marsha Carter both of Nauvoo and sister-in-law: Vickie Carter of Nauvoo. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews who were among many that called her Grandma Jean.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one sister: Helen and one brother: David “Jethro” along with Brothers-in-law: Rich Rambo and Wendell Overfield.

Jean was a 1959 graduate of Nauvoo High School. She and her husband operated the Icarian in Nauvoo for several years and were lifetime farmers near Powellton. She was an avid Democrat, St. Louis Cardinals and Iowa State Cyclones Fan. Jean enjoyed reading, cooking, sewing, quilting, crocheting, playing cards and visiting family in Arizona.  

Her body has been entrusted Schmitz-Banks and Beals Funeral Home for cremation.

A Celebration of Life will be held in the Spring of 2019, with Pastor Mark Anderson officiating. 

Burial will be in Thornber Cemetery near Powellton. 

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Lee County Hospice (who provided exceptional end of life care in her home) or the Hancock County Relay for Life. These memorials can be mailed to the funeral home at P.O. Box 201 Nauvoo, Illinois 62354.
