ELDON - It wasn't wrapped in a bow, but Holy Trinity packaged up a nifty second half to help snap an eight-game skid with a 68-52 win over Cardinal of Eldon on the road Friday night in boys high school basketball action.

The Crusaders fought off a 32-30 halftime deficit and outscored Cardinal 16-6 in the third period on eight points from junior Matt Hellige and then poured it on in the fourth quarter with a 20-14 advantage to secure the win.

Holy Trinity jumped out to a 9-3 first quarter lead, but Cardinal would throw up a 10-4 run to tie the game at 13. HTC would convert a 3-point play in the final minute of the quarter to take a 16-13 lead at the first break.

Junior Quentin Schneider took over things in the second quarter for Holy Trinity scoring nine of his team-high 17 in the period. The rest of the Crusaders would manage just four points in the period, while Cardinal's Jentry Arbogast hit a couple of long balls and Drake Hart put up eight to help the Comets take the two-point halftime lead.

HTC would tighten up the defense in the third quarter holding Arbogast, who finished with a game-high 22, and Hart to a combined six in the period, while Hellige went to work inside for the Crusaders.

"The boys played really well. We made some adjustments on the fly at halftime and the team responded flawlessly," Head Coach John Hellige said. "To me, that was the difference in the game. We had great execution in the second half. The boys played their hearts out and they deserved this win before the break."

Hellige finished with 16 points, while Reed Fehseke and Brant Holtkamp were also in double figures with 12 and 10 respectively. Senior Kyle Bredemeyer had six points, Adam Rauenbuehler pitched in with five and Blake Crabtree had two to round out the scoring for HTC.

The junior varsity squad also won in the opener with a 69-52 win. Jason Thurman put in 20 for the Holy Trinity. Vasin Thurman had 15 and Chandler Rung added 14 for the other Crusaders in double figures.

Holy Trinity's next game will be after the holiday break on Jan. 4 when they host Central Lee.
