Edmund E. Smith III, 81, of Fort Madison, IA, passed away at 3:40 a.m. on Saturday, December 22, 2018 at Great River Hospice House in West Burlington, IA. He was born on October 28, 1937 in Kansas City, MO to Edmund E. & Ruth Blackman Smith, Jr. He married Beatrice H. Bowery on October 25, 1968 in Clio, IA. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1958 to 1962. He went through basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, TX. He did a short tour of Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery, AL and did a 3-year European Tour in Weisbaden, Germany where he was a flight engineer on the C-47 aircraft. He was a longtime employee of HyVee in Chariton, IA and retired in 1997 after 35 years of service. He moved to Fort Madison after retirement to live on the Mississippi River. Ed was an Elks member with Lodge #374, N.R.A. member and had a passion for fishing, hunting and was an avid reader. He will be remembered for his friendly and good nature.

Ed is survived by: his wife: Beatrice “Bea” Smith of Fort Madison, IA; 1-son: Edmund (Lisa) Smith IV of Farmington, IA; 1-step granddaughter: Leslie Blunk of Fort Madison, IA & 1-brother: Kelton (Marillyn) Smith of Liberty, MO. He was preceded in death by: his parents & 1-brother: Geoff Smith.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of King-Lynk Funeral Home & Crematory. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, December 26, 2018 at King-Lynk Funeral Home & Crematory with Rev. Mark P. Spring officiating. Burial will be held at Montrose Cemetery.
