Agnella Mary “Nellie” Menke , 93, of St. Paul, Iowa, passed away at 10:05 p.m. Wednesday, December 26, 2018 at Fort Madison Community Hospital.

Born on May 10. 1925 in Houghton, Iowa the daughter of Fred and Sophia (Batenhorst) Stuekerjuergen. She married Willis Bernard Menke on September 10, 1947 at St. John’s Church in Houghton, Iowa. Together they raised eight children. He preceded her in death on November 12, 1995.

Survivors include six sons and two daughters: Victoria (Gary) Blint of West Point, Iowa, Donald (Pam) Menke of Greensboro, Georgia, Michael Menke of Omaha, Nebraska, Jean (Bob) Blackwell of Kingman, Arizona, Richard (Cathy) Menke of Tucson, Arizona, Randall Menke of West Point, Iowa, William Menke of Algonquin, Illinois, and Melvin (Barb) Menke of Kenosha, Wisconsin; sixteen grandchildren: Tammi, Dusty, Rollie, Christopher, Allison, Carey Jo, Jeff, Jennifer, Nicholas, Tyler, Brooke, Chad, Josh, Aaron, Sophia, and Benjamin; sixteen great-grandchildren; one sister: Wilma (Leo) Danze.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; three brothers: Romanus, Gilbert, and Robert Stuekerjuergen; three sisters: Generose Denning, Rita Joest, and Mildred Whitely; one daughter-in-law: Judy Menke; one grandson-in-law: Harold “Brownie” Brown.
Nellie was a graduate of the former St. John’s School in Houghton, Iowa. She was a member of St. James the Less Catholic Church in St. Paul, Iowa all of her life. She was very active in the Altar & Rosary Society of St. James Church, as well as, the Madonna Circle Daughters of Isabella where she held many different offices at the local and state level. Nellie decorated many wedding cakes and taught cake decorating classes throughout her life. Nellie enjoyed playing bingo, loved studying her family genealogy, traveling, and celebrating many family special events. Her biggest life-long enjoyment was dancing and teaching: round, square, and ballroom dancing alongside her husband, Willis.
Friends may call after 1:30 p.m. Sunday, December 30, 2018 at Schmitz Funeral Home in West Point where the family will meet with friends from 1:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. A Parish Rosary will be recited at 2:00 p.m. with a Christian Wake Service held at 4:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, December 31, 2018 at St. James the Less Catholic Church in St. Paul, Iowa with Father Bruce Rammelaere as celebrant.
Burial will be at St. James Cemetery in St. Paul.
A memorial has been made in her memory to St. James Cemetery or Holy Trinity Elementary School Capital Campaign.
