Rita Harmeyer, 88, of West Point, Iowa passed away at 4:56 a.m. Friday, December 28, 2018, at the Fort Madison Community Hospital.
Born March 31, 1930, in rural West Point, Iowa, the daughter of Henry and Eleanor (Holtkamp) Groene. On August 13, 1955, in West Point, Iowa she married Richard J. Harmeyer. He preceded her in death on August 19, 2011.
Survivors include one daughter: Jan Karl of Manhattan Beach, California; four sons: Jeff (wife Marilynne) Harmeyer of La Jolla, California, Jim (wife Mary) Harmeyer of Dillon, Colorado, Jay Harmeyer of Seattle, Washington, and Joe (wife Melinda) Harmeyer of Lafayette, California; eight grandchildren: Jake, Jon, Katie, Jenna, Rachel, Jack, Karsten, and Kai; two sisters: Eileen Peitz of Houghton, Iowa and Betty (Duane) Denning of Fort Madison, Iowa; three sisters-in-law: Imelda Groene, Mary Ann Asby and Donna (Vic) Mokricky; two brothers-in-law Carroll (wife Lois) Harmeyer and Gary (wife Joan) Harmeyer. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.
Rita was preceded in death by her parents; husband: Dick; one brother Jim Groene and three sisters: Julia Peterschmidt, Mary Holtkamp, and Rose Marie Groene in infancy.
Rita was a graduate of St. Mary’s High School. She was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in West Point where she served as Eucharistic Minister and sang in the Resurrection Choir. She was a member of P.E.O. Chapter KV, West Point Library Book Club, member and former President of the West Point American Legion Auxiliary, past member and Regent of the St. Ann’s Circle Daughters of Isabella. She was a volunteer for Lee County Hospice for over twenty years and was recognized by the State of Iowa for being a hospice volunteer. Earlier in her life she was Secretary and Loan Officer at the Fort Madison Savings and Loan and later was a Homemaker. She and Dick loved their family and going to Palm Springs, California in the winter, so their family could visit them more often. Rita enjoyed traveling with her husband, playing Bridge, golfing, water and snow skiing, and spending time with family, friends and neighbors.
Friends may call after 12:00 noon on Wednesday, January 2, 2019, at Schmitz Funeral Home in West Point where the family will receive friends from 2:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. A Parish Rosary will be recited at 3:00 p.m. and a Christian Wake Service will be held at 6:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, January 3, 2019, at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in West Point with Father Dennis Hoffman as Celebrant.
Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in West Point.
Memorials may be made in her memory to St Mary’s Church, The West Point American Legion Auxiliary or Lee County Hospice.
