Freshman Davis scores 36 in two Hound losses

Fedler leads Southeast Conference in scoring and rebounds, Rashid tops in assists

FORT MADISON - Fort Madison freshman Dayton Davis scored 19 points and 17 points, respectively in Friday and Saturday losses by the Fort Madison Bloodhound boys basketball team.

The Hounds had leads in both games but fell to Fairfield 61-57 on Friday night and then dropped another close game 62-56 to Albia.

On Friday night, the Hounds held a slim 41-40 advantage going into the fourth quarter, but Fairfield exploded for 21 points in the final period including a 6-0 run to open the final frame. Fort Madison came back to close the gap to one point with a 55-56 deficit with two minutes remaining. The Trojans would then run out the clock with a 6-1 run of their own to seal the win.

With Davis leading the team in scoring, junior Jayden Fedler put in 14 and senior Logan Rashid, who was held scoreless in the first half, finished the night with nine points. Brandon Keester had seven, junior Parker Denning had six and senior Jordyn Gerdes had two for Fort Madison. The Bloodhounds had six three-pointers on the night including two each from Davis and Denning.

Rashid had six rebounds and six assists on the night.

On Saturday, the Albia Demons came alive in the second half outscoring Fort Madison 39-26 to wipe out a 30-23 halftime deficit to knock off the Hounds. Rashid and Davis led Fort Madison in scoring with 17 each. But the Hounds couldn't find an answer for Albia's Blake Chance and Brayden Messamaker who combined for 50 points on the night. Messamaker just spotted up from the three-point arc all night hitting on four in the first half, and three in the second.

Chance put up 18 in the second half as part of Albia's second half dominance. He also went to the free throw line 11 times in the period converting nine. The sophomore is 11th in the state in scoring in Class 2A at 21.4 points per game clip.

Keester and Denning each had seven points on the night for Fort Madison. Jace Burgher had four points, while Gerdes and Fedler each scored two in the loss.

Davis and Parker tied for a team high eight boards in the game. Brandon Keester has three assists to lead Fort Madison.

Fort Madison falls to 2-2 in the Southeast Conference and 4-7 on the season and host Keokuk on Friday in girls/boys varsity double header beginning at 6:15 p.m.

Through Saturday's games, Fedler is tied with Mt. Pleasant's Sam Beatty to lead the Southeast Conference in scoring at 14.8 points per game. Rashid is fifth in the loop at 12.2 points per game. Rashid and Davis lead the conference in assists. Rashid is tops with 36 and Davis is second with 29 on the season. Fedler is tied with Fairfield's Carson Crile in rebounds with 66 total boards on the year.
