Holy Trinity boys sandwich break with two wins

FORT MADISON - The Christmas break has been good for the Holy Trinity boys basketball team.

The Crusaders ended the first half of the season with a win over Cardinal of Eldon prior to the Christmas break, the first win of the year. and then built on that with two wins out of the holiday break on Friday and Saturday.

On Friday, the Crusaders knocked off cross-county rival Central Lee 64-55 highlighted by a 13-point run in the final three minutes of the third quarter where HTC outscored the visitors 19-11 to hold a 44-36 lead going into the final period. The Hawks put up 19 in the final period, but the Crusaders scored 20 of their own to put the game away.

The Hawks fell behind early 16-10, but rallies in the second period to outscore Holy Trinity 15-9 in the second period to knot the game at 25 going into the lockerroom. Junior Matt Hellige led the Crusaders in the first half with 11 points. Juniors Quentin Schneider and Reed Fehseke each had six in the first half for the hosts.

Schneider would then put 11 in the second half to finish with a team-high 17 points for HTC. Fehseke added a 3-ball in the third period, but got loose in the 4th quarter for nine points after going to the free line seven times converting four.

Hellige would finish with 15 on the night, Adam Rauenbuehler had seven points, Brant Holtkamp scored five and Blake Crabtree finished with two points.

On Saturday, Hellige finished with 18 points as the Crusaders rolled Winfield-Mt. Union 61-38, holding the Wolves to single digits in the first three quarters. The Crusaders had 10 players score in the game as head coach John Hellige was able to get some substitution going with HTC holding a 42-24 lead going into the final period.

Fehseke and Holtkamp also were in double figures with 11 points. Schneider and Rauenbuehler each had four points, while Crabtree and Jason and Vasin Thurman each scored three and Mike DiPrima added two for HTC. Schneider led the Crusaders with nine rebounds on the night, seven on the defensive side of the floor. He had 12 on Friday against Central Lee. Rauenbuehler had six assists to lead Holy Trinity, who only committed nine fouls in the game.

The Crusaders (3-8) will host Danville Tuesday in girls/boys varsity double header.

Hellige is currently tied for second in the Southeast Iowa Superconference in rebounding with 77 rebounds on the season. He's tied with New London's Mason Porter. Schneider is right behind in fourth place with 76 rebounds for the year.
