FORT MADISON - January means kid’s art at FMAAA gallery with the Annual Budding Artist Exhibition. This feature is over a decade strong now so had to do some digging. However, it is an official record. There are over 650 examples of art from the students of Central Lee, Holy Trinity, and Ft. Madison Public. The hanging has been literally days in the making and is just culminating today.I must say quite a mother load and a challenge to keep an important concept to this show…inclusion.Needless to say all available real estate has been taken in the feature gallery. Farmers Savings Bank in the sponsor for this annual fan favorite.

There are over 60+ examples of kindergarten works.  Do believe kids are little more advanced from when this writer began the school system.  Eye spy the balancing elephants, rainbow painted owls, and tree torn paper collages from Central Lee.  First grade Holy Trinity students balance their works with largescale gracefully painted ballerinas.  First grade Lincoln and Richardson students paired their visual elements with written statements.  Third graders undertook responsibly conscious printmaking paired with cooperative themed logo cards displayed in trading card format, while third grade Holy Trinity ate at the feeder with mixed media birds of a feather.  Central Lee elementary has many circus-themed projects with first grade spot lit clowns, second grade animal crackers, fifth grade movable circus animals, and sixth grade ceramic performance animals.  Let the show go on!

Middle school students at FMMS have one instructor specializing in 3D and the other in 2D.  2D includes Picasso portraits, reflections prints, color scheme paintings, pop art prints, Cinco de mayo quilt squares, Thiebuad desserts, linocuts, and microscopic cell images.  3D utilized clay and papier mache raw materials for reptile eyes, fish, dogs, frogs, penguins, and masks.  There is also a group project for 5-8 grade students inspired by the works of Louise Nevelson.  Central Lee took a biological approach with formally attired animals, adorable tree frogs, snowmen sporting various bird species, and colorful cacti.  Holy Trinity has surrealistic magazine collages, homemade scratchboard design, earth tone winter landscapes, graffiti walls, segmented pattern paintings, and sign-language posters.  This is merely a sampling of the types of works to be seen this month at FMAAA gallery at 825 Avenue G.  AS ALWAYS thanks to the ongoing dedication of our local K-12 art instructors Kaity Price, Diane Mitchell, Amy Hellige, Ann Canida, Jamie Jones, Janelle McCrabb, and Steve Rung.

FMAAA gallery is located at 825 Avenue G and is “Always Moving”.  New this year will be expanding hours of operation to Tuesdays-Saturdays from 10am-7pm.  FMAAA sees the demand for services in the early evening and has had success with our music lessons in piano and guitar.  FMAAA has partnered with Musicians Pro-Shop in Burlington.  We have filled a guitar load for Clay Houston.  FMAAA will bring Nick Knedler into the mix for first and third Tuesday of the month lessons.  He will begin coming once we have 3 students.  We will begin filling the 4pm slots.  Lesson is half hour and we will continue to fill his slots to the 7pm time slot.  Incidentally Nick has been voted to the Iowa Music Hall of Fame this year.  Students are able to plug into the amps for that electric experience if desired.    Teri Wellborn is our piano instructor and teaches two to three Thursdays per month with over 57 years of tinkling the ivory beginning at 4pm.
