United Way offers tax assistance program

LEE COUNTY - United Way of the Great River Region is pleased to announce the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program as a service to the tri-state community.

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program is a nationwide service that offers free tax help to people who generally make $57,000 or less. The program also provides assistance to the elderly and to persons with disabilities who need to file returns.

IRS certified volunteers provide free income tax return preparation with electronic filing to qualified individuals.

The United Way will prepare returns as an appointment only site from February 5 through April 12, 2019. Drop off services are available; a pre-screening checklist will help determine if a taxpayer qualifies for assistance.

“We are excited about the opportunity to partner with the IRS and the Iowa Center for Economic Success to offer VITA as a service to the area,” said Executive Director, Karen Thie.

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA) will begin its fifth year of service with a goal of preparing 225 tax returns. Appointments are currently being scheduled.
