CLIVE, Iowa — A Lee County man said he is closer to retirement after winning a $50,000 lottery prize.

Scott Nickel of Wever claimed a top prize in the Iowa Lottery's "$50,000 Super Crossword" scratch game. It was the 17th of 48 top prizes to be awarded in the game.

Scott Nickel, of Wever, claimed his $50,000 scratch off prize in Cedar Rapids, after winning the Super Crossword scratch game while on a lunch break working as a custodian in the Burlington School District.

"I'm 64 years old and looking close to retirement," Nickel told officials Thursday as he claimed his prize at the lottery's Cedar Rapids regional office. "I think it's going to be coming a little earlier now than what I had planned. This can be a life-changing event for me."

Nickel, who works as an elementary school custodian, purchased his winning ticket at Casey's, 2630 Summer St. in Burlington. He scratched it on his lunch break.

"I started counting up the words and looked over, and I just couldn't believe it," he said. "I had to run to the convenience store to check it. I couldn't wait the rest of the night without knowing!"

In addition to saving for retirement, Nickel said he has a more immediate plan for his winnings.

"I'm going to get me some new golf clubs, I know that for sure," he said. "Pay off a couple little bills, and tuck away the rest for retirement."

The $50,000 Super Crossword is a $5 scratch game. For more information about this game, and the number of prizes still available, visit www.ialottery.com.
