Details of Tuesday stabbing released

KEOKUK - A Keokuk murder Tuesday was a result of domestic argument that turned tragic.

Adam Golden McCain, 24 of Keokuk, was arrested by Lee County Sheriff's deputies Tuesday evening after LeeComm dispatchers sent Keokuk Police to the River City Mall for an injured woman, Calove Sackman of Keokuk.

McCain was allegedly identified to a witness by Sackman, who had suffered multiple stab wounds to the torso area, and eventually died from those injuries at UnityPoint Hospital in Keokuk Tuesday night.

According to the complaint filed in South Lee County Court on Wednesday, McCain and Sackman, had been in a long-term relationship and were arguing when Sackman jumped from McCain's vehicle in the mall parking lot in the 300 block of Main Street.

After being taken into custody, McCain allegedly told authorities that he was driving Sackman around in his vehicle and became upset with her and then she jumped from the vehicle, according the complaint information.

McCain then got out of the vehicle and allegedly stabbed Sackman once and she was able to get away from him. But then he got back into his vehicle drove over to her and stabbed her repeatedly before leaving the scene.

Lee County Sheriff Stacy Weber said deputies came across McCain's vehicle on the side of the road after they were informed a possible hit and run in the area and the vehicle was attempting to leave the city.

"Deputies were told of a hit-and-run leaving the city and went to the area of the call. They found his vehicle damaged and parked along the highway," Weber said.

He said in the process of investigating the hit-and-run LeeComm dispatchers put together that the man they had detained in the hit and run, could be the same person wanted in connection with the stabbing.

"LeeComm did a good job of putting that information together and making that connection," he said.

Lee County Attorney Ross Braden said District Judge Ty Rogers has set bond at $1 million cash. McCain was booked into the Lee County Jail at about 1 a.m. Wednesday morning and remains in custody. He is facing a charge of murder in the first degree, a Class A felony carrying a penalty of lifetime imprisonment.
