Keokuk man charged with murder in Tuesday stabbing

KEOKUK - A Keokuk man is in custody this morning and is being charged with first-degree murder in the slaying of a Keokuk woman.

Twenty-four year old Adam Golden McCain was arrested late Monday and booked into the Lee County Jail on a charge of first-degree murder, a Class A Felony. If found guilty of the charge, McCain faces life in a state correctional facility.

According to a release issued on this morning at 9:41 a.m. On February 5th, 2019 at approximately 10:27 pm, Keokuk Police Department Officers responded to the 300 block of Main Street in the River City Mall parking lot for a female who had been stabbed.

The victim, Calove Sackman, of Keokuk, was transported by ambulance to Unity Point Hospital in Keokuk, where she succumbed to her injuries.

According to Lee County Jail officials, McCain has been taken into custody and was booked into the jail at about 1 a.m. Tuesday morning. As of 10:45 a.m. he hadn't seen a judge so no information on bond was available. Keokuk Police officials said the investigation remains active.

Attempts to reach investigators in the case this morning were unsuccessful.

The Keokuk Police Department was assisted by the, the State of Iowa, Division of Criminal Investigations, Lee County Sheriff’s Office, Lee County Attorney’s Office, Lee County Ambulance Service, Lee County Medical Investigator and, the Keokuk Fire Department.

A charge is merely an accusation and a defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
