FORT MADISON – If you attended the benefit for the Fort Madison Food Pantry sponsored by our local Eagles Chapter on Friday, February 8, 2019, you know what a great evening it was. The attendance was just short of monumental—170 meals were served, which according to the Eagles’ cooking crew was one of the most ever. Needless to say, this caused a little back-up in the kitchen, but no one seemed to mind. After all, it was a giant party and that was the overall tone! The talented Hillsiders (Brad Kurtz, Stephanie Hymes-White, and Kent Strabala) kept everyone entertained with their music causing children to start dancing in whatever space they could find. The dessert table with donated pastries from the Kensington, Kim’s in West Point and various volunteers was also a great option for entertainment, as well as the silent auction and live auction tables.

None of this would have happened without the Eagles. The Fraternal Order of Eagles is an international non-profit organization dedicated to philanthropic and service efforts. Each month our local chapter sponsors a benefit for one of the area’s local nonprofit agencies, hosting the event and generously sharing the profits. The Eagles have 119 years of “People Helping People”. Just to name a few of their achievements—they founded Mother’s Day, created the Fraternal Order of Eagles Diabetes Research Center at the University of Iowa, and served as a driving force behind Social Security. Fort Madison’s local Eagles spokesperson Ellen Freitag noted that new members are always welcome; inquire anytime during the Club’s operating hours.
