FM schools send 26 to state speech contest

FORT MADISON - The Holy Trinity Speech Team and Fort Madison High School speech students competed at IHSSA District contests on February 23 and 26 students advanced to the State Contest to be held at North Scott High School on March 9.

Those receiving a Division “I” rating and earning the right to compete at “State” are senior Sam Avery, Spontaneous Speaking (Sam is a two-time “All State” performer); juniors - Claire Graham, Prose; Ryan Otte, Radio News; Jayde Watznauer, Poetry; sophomores - Danny Caruso, Acting; Elizabeth Ebbing, Literary Program; Brandon Jarvis, Original Oratory; Ava Peitz, Prose; Annabelle Scheetz, Poetry; John Stinson, Literary Program; freshmen - Lucy Graham, Review; Jack Malinski, Spontaneous Speaking; Alexis Stalcup, Expository Address; and Exchange Student Adam Kit, Expository Address.

Other team participants were senior Sterling Barnes, Acting and StoryTelling; freshmen Michael Hellman, Radio News; Mya Schmitz, Review; and Exchange Student Yulu Zhang, Solo Musical Theater. Five of the State bound orators were double entered and received Division “II” ratings in their second event; C. Graham, Solo Musical Theater;  Otte, Prose; Scheetz, Acting; Stinson, Improv. Acting; Watznauer, Solo Musical Theater. The HTC team is proudly coached by Joseph Harmon.

At Fort Madison High School, "I" ratings went to Claire Hellman Solo Musical Theatre ,and Prose; Shyanna Hoenig-Rippenkroeger in Poetry, and Prose; Ellie Baxter in Improvisational Acting; Korinna Kettle in Spontaneous Speaking, Aniah Ross in Solo Musical Theatre, and Prose; Makayla Eastin in Poetry; Nathan Rose in Improvisational Acting; and Zina Johnstun in Solo Musical Theater, and Poetry.

Baxter also got a "II" rating in StoryTelling.

All "I" ratings earned an advancement to the state meet at North Scott on March. 9.
