Carl J. Kraus, 90, of Fort Madison, IA, passed away at 9:19 a.m. on Monday, March 4, 2019 at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington, IA. He was born on February 25, 1929 in Keokuk, IA to Carl Edward Joseph & Klara Franziska Wurz Kraus. He married Darlene Y. Cowles on January 10, 1959

at Sacred Heart Church in Fort Madison, IA. He was a purchasing agent for various area industries and was a past member of the Kiwanis Club & Knights of Columbus. He was recruited right out of high school to be a fingerprint classifier for the FBI in Washington, D.C. and then served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War as an M.P. on the front lines. Following active duty, he enlisted in the Army Reserves. He was a devoted bugler for area drum & bugle corps. He enjoyed all dogs, golf, fishing, chatting & joking, but especially spending time with his family.

Carl is survived by: his wife: Darlene Kraus of Fort Madison, IA; 2-daughters: Carla (Russ) Eagen of Monmouth, IL & Mindy (Bob Pratt) Kraus of Coralville, IA; 4-granddaughters: Meredith Eagen of Galesburg, IL, Madeline (Andy Kincaid) Eagen of Burlington, IA, Michaela (Seth McDuffee) Eagen of Cedar Falls, IA & Marina (Sam Anderson) Eagen of Moline, IL. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of King-Lynk Funeral Home & Crematory. The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. on Friday, March 8, 2019 with a memorial service to immediately follow at 2:00 p.m. at King-Lynk Funeral Home & Crematory with Rev. Daniel Dorau officiating. Burial will be held at Soldiers’ Circle in Oakland Cemetery with military rites performed by the Fort Madison Veterans Honor Guard. A memorial has been established for the University of Iowa Ophthalmology Department.
