John G. “Jack” McCannon, 99, of Fort Madison, IA, passed away at 2:40 p.m. on Friday, March 8, 2019 at Fort Madison Community Hospital. He was born on May 11, 1919 in Fort Madison, IA to Harry E. & Pauline Sanford

McCannon. He married Eileen C. King on July 3, 1945 in Fort Madison, IA. She preceded him in death on October 23, 2012. He worked for the Santa Fe Railroad for 40 years, from 1939 to 1979 and was a member of Sacred Heart Church, Fort Madison Elks, Fort Madison Eagles Club, Knights of Columbus & the VFW. He was an avid golfer, poker player, bridge player & pool player. He served in the U.S. Naval Communications Intelligence Department in the Pacific during WWII.

Jack is survived by: 2-daughters: Katherine (Stephen) Stephenson of Augusta, GA & Beth (Terry) Allen of Wapello, IA; 1-son: John (Cathy) McCannon, Jr. of Wichita, KS; 7-grandchildren; 6-great grandchildren & 4-step great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by: his parents, wife, 1-son: Mark; 1-granddaughter: Katie Florio; 1-brother & 1-sister.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of King-Lynk Funeral Home & Crematory. Friends may call after 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 12, 2019 with the family to receive friends from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. immediately followed by a rosary & wake service at King-Lynk Funeral Home & Crematory. The funeral mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, March 13, 2019 at Sacred Heart Church with Rev. Joseph Phung officiating. Burial will be held at Soldiers’ Circle in Oakland Cemetery with military rites performed by the Fort Madison Veterans Honor Guard. A memorial has been established for Sacred Heart Church.
