Area hoopsters show off at senior all-star games

BURLINGTON - At one point it was Holy Trinity 17, the girls "Home" All Stars 13 in Saturday night's Senior All-Star Classic at Father Minnett Gym at Notre Dame High School

Holy Trinity's Emily Box had 14 points including six of the "Away" team's first seven and then fellow senior Taylor Boeding banged in three straight 3-pointers and the north girls were up 17-13. She finished with 12 points on the night.

Boeding scored 244 points on the year including 32.6% from beyond the 3-point arch. She attempted 190 long shots on the year and connected on 62, both leading the Southeast Iowa Superconference South division.

The "Away" team comprised mostly of teams from the southern part of the area won 70-42 over the "Home" team.

Boeding also competed a 3-point contest hitting for nine points in the first round but didn't make it to the final shootout. WACO's Kristen Conley won the contest with nine in the shootout. Each players shot 15 baskets total from both baselines and the top of the key with the fifth ball at each spot worth two points.

Box tied for third in the SEISC South division with 14.4 points per game and led the conference in rebounds with 9.6 per outing.

In the boys game, the away team scored a 112-98 comeback win after trailing by three at halftime. Fort Madison's Logan Rashid and Brandon Keester both played for the "Away" team. Fort Madison's Ryan Wilson coached the boys team.

In both the boys and the girls games, 20-minute halves were played with breaks each five minutes for substitutions.

A dunk contest was held between the two games with Wapello's Keaton Mitchell winning. His first dunk in the contest was a leap over Rashid who stood in the lane just off the basket.

Keester and Rashid both qualified to compete in the boy's 3-point contest. Keester had nine points and hit the "money ball" on his final shot but it came after the buzzer and didn't count. Rashid also had nine in the first round which didn't qualify for the shootout.

Rashid finished the year third in the Southeast Conference scoring at 13.3 points per outing. Keester and Rashid finished the year fourth and fifth in the conference in 3-pointers made at 36 and 34 respectively. Keester hit 35.6% of his 3-balls while Rashid was at 31.8% for the year.

In the first half, Rashid had a steal at about mid court and fed a leaking Keontae Luckett down the middle of the floor for a stuff.

Central Lee's MaKenna Hall and Kassidy Haley played for the away team as did Keokuk's Alex Walter. Walter competed in the dunk contest but didn't make it out of the first round.
