FORT MADISON - A local Cub Scout pack donated over 300 pounds of food to the Fort Madison Food Pantry as a result of a weekend food drive.

Cubmaster Kayla Wiegand and her Boy Scouts Pack 7 organized the food drive to benefit the Fort Madison Food Pantry. Their efforts netted 350 nonperishable food items or 325.1 pounds to help feed families in the Fort Madison area who suffer from food insecurity.

Pantry volunteers Patty Knight and Sue Davis took the opportunity to educate the troop about local poverty issues, food assistance, and the many benefits of volunteerism.

Per current data the boys’ donation of 325 pounds will meet the needs of 72 people for a week; on average the Pantry serves 275 people weekly. 100% of food costs is covered by community donations such as the boys’ and 100% of the donations go to cover costs.

Approximately 100 hours of volunteer help is spent weekly handling operations to keep the Food Pantry open Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 9am to noon and 1 to 3 pm.

Food Pantry director Lin Cramer thanked the Boy Scout leaders, including: Angela Gadeau, Adam Newton, Kayla Wiegand, Steve Duce, and Debra Milligan and volunteers Josh Wiegand, Kathy Burkhardt and Alicia Griffiths for their leadership. She also thanked the scouts of Pack 7 Calvin Johnson, Rainer Johnson, Jacob Newton, Isaac Newton, Wyatt Duce, Zach Lair, Gavin Burkhardt, Levi Johnson and Xander Gable.
