Charles Arthur DeWitt, 85 years, of Wever, Iowa died at 11:43 am Sunday, March 31, 2019 at Blessing Hospital, Quincy, Illinois. He was born April 26, 1933 in Burlington, Iowa, a son of Albert and Myrle (Kirby) DeWitt. On October 23, 1954, he married Melva Jean Menke. She survives.

He attended Fort Madison High School. After High School, he farmed with his dad. He later worked at the Iowa State Penitentiary, Wever Elevator, First Miss, and Audubon-Brookhiser Trucking. He was a charter member of the Wever Fire Department and was a fireman for 30 years. He was a member of IOOF Lodge in Wever and Royal Neighbors. His hobbies included model trains and collecting Matchbox cars. He loved to shoot pool and in his earlier years he enjoyed bowling. He was a John Wayne fan and of other western movies. He was also a Cubs and NASCAR fan. He coached Little League Baseball when his sons were young. He enjoyed watching his grandchildren and great grandchildren play sports.

He is survived by his wife, Melva DeWitt of Wever; two sons: Dean (Jody) DeWitt of Fort Madison, and Craig DeWitt of Wever; two daughters, Lynette Stein of Williamsburg, Iowa and Diana (Howard) Vorwaldt of Wever; two “adopted” daughters, Stephanie (Troy) Fisher of Arizona and Susan Sanford (Joe Naumann) of Fort Madison; 16 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sons, Bryan and Alan DeWitt, two daughters, Yvonne Metcalf and Terri Wilson, three grandchildren: Justin DeWitt, Samuel Metcalf, and Devin Royer.

Visitation will be held from 5:30 to 7:00 pm Thursday, April 4, 2019 with an IOOF Memorial Service at 6:30 pm at the Barr Memorial Chapel, Fort Madison. Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 am Friday, April 5, 2019 at the Barr Memorial Chapel with Jason DeWitt officiating. Burial will be at Oakland Cemetery, Fort Madison. A memorial has been established for the Wever Fire Department or the IOOF Scholarship Fund, contributions may be made at the funeral home.
