FORT MADISON - The union that represents Fort Madison School District non salaried associates and employees is asking for a $1.50 per hour increase in pay for the upcoming school year.

On Thursday, the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees and the Fort Madison Community School District entered into initial negotiations to set pay rates that would begin July 1, 2019.

The union is asking for a Job Class A starting rate of $8.80 per hours. Class B jobs would start at $8.90, Class C at $9.10, Class D would be $9.20 and Class E would start at $10.10/hour.

All current employees would be boosted by $1.50 per hour under the proposal.

The district countered in their initial proposal with a five-cent per hour across the board increase. The district also asked to have further discussions about increasing the starting pay for special education associates.

The district also wants to change payroll to the 15th and last day of each month instead of the current alternating Fridays, which would decrease the amount of paychecks from 26 to 24 per year.

After the initial proposals were offered, the negotiations were closed to the public. State code requires initial proposals to be made in open session and then the negotiations can be closed to the public.
