FMHS girls win Monday; 2nd at Saturday Invite

KEOKUK - The Fort Madison girls tennis team shut out Keokuk on the road Monday night.

The Lady Bloodhounds only gave up four games in six singles matches and 10 games over the entire contest.

Lanie Kuntz, Zoe Ramatowski and Lily Cadwallader all pitched shutouts at No. 2-4 singles. Alyse Schmidt also scored a 10-0 shutout at No. 6 singles.

Larissa Ferrill, playing at No. 1 singles needed a bit more time in her 10-3 win over Keokuk's Keleigh Hall, while Kirklynn Nafziger won easily 10-1 over Delaynce Billings at No 5.

"Very pleased with our effort tonight," head coach Jeremy Swink said.

"We did a much better job communicating and working together. Every point, match and set they win, they gain that much more confidence in themselves and their teammates, which is exactly what we are striving for. Each of those positives being said, there is always room for improvement and areas we need to get better at."

In doubles action ,Ferrill and Kuntz won 10-6 over Keokuk's Hall and Emma Evans. Ramatowski and Nafziger beat Kierra Huddleston and Julia de Gala 10-0, while Cadwallader and Schmidt sealed the day with a 10-1 win over Billings and Willow Carrington at No. 3 doubles.

On Saturday at the Fort Madison Invitational's two-seed format, Fort Madison's Ramatowski and Nafziger rolled to a first-place finish at No. 2 doubles.

The duo played at the Holy Trinity courts and knocked off West Burlington/ Notre Dame's Abby McAtee and Shuyu Xian 8-0, and then beat Fairfield's Abby Scheafer and Lauren Kraemer to advance to the title match 8-2.

There they faced Maharishi's Lily Fenton and Deepika Scharma and won again 8-2.

In the No. 1 doubles flight, Fort Madison's Ferrill and Kuntz slid by Maharishi's Olivia Gobbal and Ynet Deribe 8-3 and then swept Mt. Pleasant's Gerin Zihlman and Hallie Sandeen 8-0 to get to the title match against Keokuk.

There Hall and Evans downed Fort Madison 8-5 giving the Lady Hounds a 2nd-place finish.

The Lady Hounds got another 2nd place finish out of Alyse Schmidt. The senior rolled past Maharishi's Shrist Sharma in straight sets 8-0 before outlasting West Burlington/Notre Dame's Courtney Erickson in a tiebreaker after the two went 8-8. Schmidt was able to win the first-to-seven-by-two tiebreaker 7-2.

With the win she faced Fairfield's Nellie Higdon who came out on top 8-3 for the title at No. 2 singles.

At the No. 1 singles bracket, Lily Cadwallader took 4th place. Cadwallader beat Keokuk's Billings in the first round 8-0 to face Fairfield's two-time state champion Anatta Charoenkul losing 8-0.

Cadwallader slipped into the consolation bracket where she won her next match over Maharishi's Vaisnavii Mahannaj to advance to the fourth-place match against Mt. Pleasant's Shaleen Thiengmany and lost 1-8 to get fourth in the bracket.

Fort Madison ended with 13 points, just one shy of Fairfield for the team title. Keokuk and Maharishi each finished with six, Mt. Pleasant had five and West Burlington Notre Dame had 4.
