Fort Madison girls drop first match of the year

BLOOMFIELD - The Lady Hounds girls tennis team struggled in blustery conditions on Friday night in rural Davis County and dropped their first dual meet of the year 4-5 to Davis County.

Fort Madison, who fall to 2-1 on the year, won at No's 1-3 singles with Zoe Ramatowski leading the way with an 8-1 win over Haley Swan. Larissa Ferrill and Lanie Kuntz, playing at Nos. 1 and 2 respectively, each one by 8-3 scores with Ferrill knocking of Bella Tranquillino and Kuntz dropping Abby Vaughn.

Davis County got the better of the Lady Hounds in the bottom of the singles action taking Nos. 4-6. Kirklynn Nafziger lost to Avery Thompson 4-8, Lily Cadwallader fell 5-8 and Lily Scott lost 3-8 to Davis County's Morgan Klaus.

"The girls did not play their best tonight. The wind and weather was a factor, but it was equally a factor for the Davis County girls. They found a way to adapt, we did not," said head coach Jeremy Swink.

"We need to become more mentally tough, and learn to battle through adversity. Taking nothing away from Davis County, they are a tough team. But we didn’t give them our best fight tonight. This is a team we will see come regional play, and I hope our girls are able to use this as fuel for some revenge.”

In doubles action Ferrill and Kuntz escaped with an 8-8 win after securing the match with a 7-3 tiebreaker over Tranquillion and Vaughn.

Davis County then took the next two matches as Thompson and Yanhke knocked off Ramatowski and Nafziger 8-3, and Cadwallader and Scott fell to Swan and Klaus 6-8.

The Lady Hounds travel to Fairfield on Tuesday for a dual match.
