WEST POINT - The Holy Trinity Catholic boys and girls soccer teams gave the vaunted Burlington Notre Dame squads all they could handle at South Park in West Point Monday night.

The girls dropped a 2-1 nail biter to the Nikes who were 4-1 coming into the game with their only loss to state powerhouse Davenport Assumption in their first game of the year.

The boys squad dropped a close 2-0 loss to the Nikes in the nightcap of the double header. The Nikes came into the contest 7-1 with their only loss to Davenport North in the Fort Madison Invitational. The Nikes have outscored their opponents by a whopping 45-3 margin and have the most wins in the state.

In the girls outing. the Crusaders held the Nikes scoreless in the first half, but Nike junior Izzy Haze got things going in the first five minutes of the second half with a goal passed Holy Trinity's Sam Pothitakis. Senior Kassidy Rashid would punch one in again shortly after Haze's goal to put the Nikes up 2-0.

Junior Ashlynn Haas would have a free kick sail just over the top of the crossbar for HTC in the first half.

"Half time was the worst thing that happened," said head Coach Michael Sheerin. "We came sailing high only to be torpedoed in the first five flat minutes of the second half. It took quite a while to hit our stride again until Elle Rashid met a sublime corner kick cross with a header that bulged the back of the net."

Rashid's header passed the Nikes' goal keeper Elani Mears cut the lead to 2-1, but HTC couldn't get a ball passed Mears the rest of the match.

Sheerin said Nicole Pothitakis and Elysse Pothitakis were great in the middle of the park, breaking up attacks and leading HTC's forward attacks. The backline of Haas, Maille Sheerin and Emily Box were rock solid and Rashid, Claire Pothitakis and Taylor Boeding kept the pressure on the Notre Dame's defense.

Boeding had two shots on goal. Sam Pothitakis had seven saves on the night and Claire Pothitakis had the assist.

In the boys outing, the Nikes' freshman Parker Davis had both goals for Notre Dame as the Nikes moved to 8-1 on the year.

Holy Trinity's Blake Crabtree had seven saves in the contest. The Crusaders had four shots on goal, but Notre Dame's Ethan Schramm was able to coral each attempt.

The Holy Trinity boys are now 4-4 on the year.

Both Crusaders teams play tonight at Central Lee with a 5 p.m. game time.
