Melba A. Therme-Steinhilber, 101, of Farmington and Fort Madison, Iowa, passed away at 9:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 23, 2019, at the Donnellson Health Center, Donnellson, Iowa.

She was born on May 12, 1917 on the family farm near Donnellson, Iowa, the daughter of Delbert A. and Pansy B. (McPherson) Henkle. On June 8, 1939, she married Manford T. Therme in Davenport, Iowa, he preceded her in death on July 7, 1991. On May 10, 1994 she married Robert W. Steinhilber, he preceded her in death on July 18, 2003.

Survivors include her daughter: Janey R, Lamborn of Donnellson, Iowa; two grandchildren: Tracy (Gary) Frahm of Miles, Iowa and Brian K. Fuchs of Urbandale, Iowa; five great grandchildren: Brooke Fuchs of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Dyllan Frahm of Ames, Iowa, Jaime Frahm of Deerfield, Florida, Jack Fuchs and Will Fuchs of Urbandale, Iowa; a step-daughter, Karla (Mark) McNelis of Glendale, California; a step-son, Wayne Steinhilber of Washington, D.C.; six step-grandchildren, four step-great grandchildren and four step-great-great grandchildren. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands; a son in infancy; a brother, Albert L. Henkle and son-in-law, James W. “Bill” Lamborn.
Melba attended Donnellson High School for two years and graduated in 1935 from Farmington High School. She also attended Iowa Wesleyan College. She began her teaching career in the Lee County country schools including Van Buren, Hickory Grove, Sawyer, Belmont, Saxe and Primrose. Melba then taught at Farmington/Harmony. She then retired after teaching 19 years at Lincoln Grade School in Fort Madison, Iowa.

She was a member of the Farmington United Methodist Church where she taught Bible School for several years. She was active in many area organizations, including Farmington P.E.O Chapter O, ISEA, NEA, Farmington Cemetery Association, Quilt and Afghan Club, Fort Madison Sweet Adelines, Fort Madison Area Arts Association, Eastern Star and Bible Study Club. Melba enjoyed crossword puzzles, painting, sewing and gardening. She especially enjoyed spending time with family.
Her body has been entrusted to Schmitz Funeral Home for cremation.
A Graveside memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, July 5, 2019 at Greenglade Cemetery, Farmington, Iowa with Pastor Michael Elrod officiating.

A memorial has been established in her memory for Greenglade Cemetery.
