FORT MADISON - Fort Madison's girls tennis team placed second out of the four teams that competed at Monday's Southeast Conference tournament at Fort Madison High School.

Larissa Ferrill started strong with an 8-2 win against Keokuk's Keleigh Hall, but ran into Fairfield's No. 1 in Yana Gaskell for the single's No. 1 championship title. Gaskell swept Ferrill 8-0, winning the championship.

Lanie Kuntz breezed through her first game 8-3 against Mount Pleasant's Hallie Sandeen in the No. 2 singles bracket. However. much like her teammate Ferrill, Kuntz also drew the short stick, having to play one of the best in the state in Fairfield's Anatta Charoenkul. Charoenkul won the championship for No. 2 singles 8-0 against Kuntz.

Zoe Ramatowski continued the trend of easy streaks for Fort Madison, defeating Keokuk's Kierra Huddleston 8-0 in the first round of No. 3 singles. Fairfield's tennis team ruined the chance for Fort Madison to win a championship yet again, as Nellie Higdon downed Ramatowski 8-1.

Kirklyn Nafziger found the most success of any Bloodhound Monday. Nafziger started with an 8-1 win over Keokuk's Julia de Gala. Taking on a Fairfield school for the title again, Nafziger picked up the 8-4 win, avenging her teammates and capturing the the No. 4 singles title.

Lily Cadwallader also made it past the first round after taking down Sierra Barton of Mount Pleasant. Tess Paton of Fairfield bested Cadwallader 8-1 for the No. 5 singles title.

Alyse Schmidt took down Mount Pleasant's Olivia Carson 8-4 in the first round of No. 6 singles, but fell to Fairfield's Destiny Gridley 8-4.

Ferrill and Kuntz teammed up in doubles and walked away with an 8-3 win against Keokuk's Hall and Evans. But once again, the combo of Gaskell and Higdon was too much, taking No. 1 doubles 8-2.

Ramatowski and Nafziger paired up for No. 2 singles, but were defeated by Mount Pleasant's Thiengmany and Runyon in the first round. Ramatowski and Nafziger rebounded, sweeping Keokuk for third place.

Carson and Barton of Mount Pleasant bested Fort Madison's No. 3 doubles in Cadwallader and Schmidt, but Cadawallader and Schmidt also saved face with another 6-0 sweep of Keokuk for third.

The girls are off for the rest of the week until team regionals start on Saturday, again at Fort Madison
