FORT MADISON - Fort Madison Community Hospital (FMCH) will host the next session in their monthly community health education series on Tuesday, June 11, 2019.

This session entitled “Hernias: More Common Than You Think” will take place from 5:30-6:30 p.m. at FMCH in the Business Center Conference Rooms. Dr. Rachel Knudson, General Surgeon, will lead the discussion on hernias.

There are many different types of hernias and they can happen in different parts of the body. A hernia is defined as a protrusion, bulge or projection of an organ or a part of an organ through the body wall that normally contains it. Men are eight times more likely to develop a hernia and 20 times more likely to need a hernia repair compared to a woman. Dr. Knudson will explore the different types of hernias, their symptoms and your treatment options.

Dr. Knudson is a Board Certified General Surgeon. She has been with FMCH since July of 2018, joining our medical team after working for four years at Skiff Medical Center in Newton, Iowa. She received her Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine Degree from the Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences in Kansas City, Missouri and completed her General Surgery Residency at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. She also holds an Adjunct Clinical Faculty position at Des Moines University College of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery.

General Surgeons work closely with primary care providers in prevention, diagnosis, treatment and post-operative care. General surgery services include but are not limited to the following: colonoscopies, mastectomies, intestinal and colon surgery, biopsies, hernia repair, appendectomies, gallbladder removal, etc.

This educational session is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served. For more information call, 319-376-2244.
