Library unveils summer reading programs

Posted

FORT MADISON - The library is offering fun activities for everyone this summer. We’ve planned events for everyone to take part in, including prizes for reading.

We have three different reading prize levels for every 250 minutes you read (or listen to!). Kid’s prizes include a pin ball game, galaxy goo, space shuttle, foam rocket launcher and a toy telescope. For adults, we have space explorer duckies, planetary stress balls, a rocket pen and coffee coupons.

Kids have weekly programs, beginning June 10, including crafts on Mondays, Tuesday morning movies and special activities on Wednesdays. Special performers this year include the Big Bang Bubble Show from Absolute Science, Illusions with Steve Couch and animal ambassadors from the Blank Park Zoo. We’re also going to be offering three Saturday morning story hour events in Central Park at 10:30am on June 22 and July 6 and 13. In case of bad weather, these will be moved to the library.

There are several things for teens to do, as well. All events are from 3:30-5:00 pm. Teens will have the opportunity to make a nebula in a bottle and galaxy slime on June 25. On July 2, they can experiment with canister rockets and try their hand at making borax geodes on July 16.

There are two primary programs planned for adults and kids 12 and older. On June 25, beginning at 5:30pm, we will be hosting another paint and sip program at the library. Participants will be able to create their own version of Van Gogh’s “Starry Starry Night” and sample several different non-alcoholic mocktails. Due to space limitations, registration is required for this event. On July 12, we will be having a space celebration at the Lee County Conservation building. This will involve a pop-up planetarium, a chance to explore the sound and feel of space and you can make your own glow in the dark t-shirt. Please provide your own dark colored t-shirt.

We also have a collaborative color by letter poster at the library. Every time you check out books, get some stickers to put on the poster as we complete the picture together.

We hope everybody has a happy, enlightening and well-read summer!
