LEE COUNTY RSVP/UNITED WAY OF THE GREAT RIVER REGION Literacy Program has held end of year wrap-up parties at all three schools enrolled in the program. Our Literacy Program targets students in 2nd and 3rd grades who are just below reading level and pairs them with volunteers who come to listen to the students read two times per week for 30 minutes each time.

The schools whom participated in the Literacy Program were; Hawthorne Elementary, Keokuk, Iowa, Central Lee Elementary, Donnellson, Iowa, Lincoln Elementary and Richardson Elementary in Fort Madison, Iowa. The students were all given certificates for completion of the Literacy Program and all volunteers were acknowledged for their donation of their time to the program.

The feedback from students, teachers, principals and volunteers was overwhelming. The students stated that they loved having the tutors (volunteers) come and listen to them read and felt that they can read a lot better now. The teachers and principals stated that they loved the program and see it as a needed tool to help student’s comprehension and confidence. They also thanked the volunteers for giving of their time to help the students and felt that all of the volunteers were wonderful in helping student.

We look forward to the start of next year’s Literacy Program in each school once again and hope to expand our program into Hancock County, Illinois and Clark County, Missouri.
