CLIVE, Iowa — A Lee County woman scratched off a $250,000 lottery prize just a couple of days before her birthday.
Doris Horton, 59, of Argyle, won the sixth of 18 top prizes available in the Iowa Lottery’s “Aces High” scratch game.
“Quite a few people know about it, but they think I’m lying,” Horton said with a laugh as she claimed her prize on Tuesday at the lottery’s regional office in Cedar Rapids.
Horton, a respiratory care practitioner, purchased her winning ticket at Hy-Vee, 3111 Main St. in Keokuk. She had stopped to pick up a newspaper to read at work before her nighttime shift started, but the store was sold out so she bought a scratch ticket instead.
She said after she scratched off the $250,000 prize, she didn’t believe her eyes and thought she wasn’t seeing it right because she was still tired from working the third shift.
“When I scratched it off, I thought, ‘No, this can’t be right,’” she said. “So I called my brother and he thought it was a terrible, terrible joke to wake him up out of bed.”
Horton took the ticket to her brother’s house and he confirmed her big win. She said she plans to use her winnings to pay off her home and care for her two great-grandsons.
