FORT MADISON - Old Fort Players is gearing up for some summer fun! In the interest of adding some variety to their schedule, the community theater is opening its doors to local talent. Join them on Saturday, June 22 for a day of Midwestern Folk music. Gypsy, Hippie, HillBilly Dude’s Roadside Revival will perform twice. GHHDRR is beatnik/singer songwriter Jonas Woodstock, a traveling one-man band based in Ft. Madison, who plays his unique style of Altered Appalachian green dirt folk rock n soul.

First, bring the kids from 2:00 – 4:00 pm for the Family Matinee. Tickets for this fun, youth-oriented show are $ 6.00 for Adults (Kids 8 and under free with accompanying adult.) Youth aged 9-17 can attend for $4.00. GHHDRR will perform again from 8:00 – 10:00 PM for the grownups.  All tickets for the main evening show are $ 8.00. Merchandise will be available for sale before and after the events.

“It’s just one of the many new ideas we’ve been working on at the theater,” OFP Secretary Angela Sanford said. “We skipped a Spring Show this season so we would have time to regroup and plan for next season, but we also wanted to test the waters to see what else our fans want.”

OFP is also looking for volunteers to perform in and staff their regular season events as well as step into several open Board of Director offices and committee chairs. The public is invited to attend the annual meeting. Take advantage of this chance to vote, volunteer, plan next season and to get an update on the success of last season. OFP Board members and friends will gather at La Casa Salsa in Fort Madison at 5:00 pm on June 30.

Sunday, July 7 at 6pm the theater once again presents the ‘Joe Sanford Jam’ – an evening of Blues music from Joe and his friends. Admission is a free will offering to support Old Fort Players. Refreshments and Joe’s CD’s will be available for sale.

“This Jam Session has become a regular thing with us now. Joe and his friends are so generous with their time and talent. We get 100% of the door and concessions so it’s gives us a great opportunity to raise money without the cost of putting on a play,” President Ty Clute said.

July 13 at 7:00 pm, the theater will host “Destination Tribal” a local belly dance troupe. Tickets will cost $8 and will be available soon on the OFP website. The troupe holds an annual event at the Capitol Theater in Burlington every year (June 15) and they were excited to hold a second one for their fans in Fort Madison. “It’s a win-win for us all,” Board member Robbie Phillips told us. Destination Tribal is a local belly dance troupe that specializes in Tribal Fusion dance. They perform at birthdays, weddings, and special events.
