Two killed in early Sunday morning mishap

DONNELLSON - An early morning accident near Donnellson has claimed the lives of two area men and left another hospitalized.

According to Iowa State Patrol reports, at about 1:17 a.m. Sunday morning a 2000 Ford pickup driven by Robert LeRoy Boyd, 28, of Kahoka failed to negotiate a curve in the road on Highway 2 at 140th Avenue west of Donnellson.

Investigators believe that Boyd overcorrected crossed the center line and struck a 2005 GMC Yukon driven by Laverne Mark Faulkner, 63 of Farmington nearly head-on.

Faulkner, and a passenger in the vehicle, Michael Paul Faulkner, 39, also of Farmington, were transported to area hospitals by Lee County EMS where they were pronounced dead.

Boyd was taken to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics by Lee County EMS and his condition is unknown.

According to the ISP crash investigation report, none of the three were wearing their seatbelts at the time of the accident.

The Lee County Sheriff's Department and Donnellson Fire & Rescue assisted at the scene.
