DAVENPORT - The Fort Madison Lady Hounds tallied three wins in less than six hours on Tuesday as part of a Quad Cities tournament.
The Hounds got the best of Davenport Central in the key matchup of the day when senior Vanessa Golowach wore a pitch with the count full and the bases loaded to move Cassie Powers home with the winning run for a 6-5 win in a five-inning contest.
The Lady Hounds trailed 5-2 going into the home half of the fifth. Olivia Williams and Kylee Cashman each singled to start the rally and then Maycee Featheringill laced a double to deep left center scoring both runners with no outs.
Powers then singled to center moving Alyson Helmick, who was pinch-running for Featheringill to third. Powers moved to second on a throw to third trying to get Helmick advancing. Helmick come around to score on a wild pitch to tie the game at 5. Logan Johnson and Ivy Geerdes would get back-to-back walks to load the bases for Dalyn Wondra.
Wondra would pop into an infield fly rule for the first out, but Golowach would then work the count full in the next at bat before getting plunked for the game winning run.
Williams was 3-for-3 hitting with a couple RBI and a run and pilfered a couple bags to lead the Lady Hounds from her lead-off spot. Featheringill had a couple hits and two RBI.
Powers went the distance giving up five runs, four earned on 11 hits including a home run. She's 4-3 on the year.
In the opener, Fort Madison rolled Tipton 7-2 behind a complete game, six-hit performance from Neeley Rehm. The eighth-grade hurler struck out eight while not surrendering an earned run. She also went 2-of-3 at the plate with an RBI.
Fort Madison led 1-0 through until the bottom of the third when the Lady Hounds brought five over the dish. Jassmine Bass led off with a single in the nine hole. Williams would get plunked and Johnson would fan for the first out. Then Featheringill, Powers and Geerdes put together a string of singles with one out. After Wondra grounded out to short for the second out, Rehm drilled a single straight up the middle scoring two to make it 6-0, but would get caught stealing to end the inning.
Fort Madison would score one more in the fourth inning and Tipton would salvage a run in the fifth and sixth but Rehm would slam to door when she picked off Tipton's Keeli Claussen to end the game 7-2.
In the final game of the day, the Lady Hounds found themselves against a young Easton Valley with only one senior on the squad.
Fort Madison would jump out to a quick 7-1 lead through three highlighted by Williams 2 RBI double in the bottom half of the third.
Freshman Katie Dennis was in the circle for Fort Madison and threw just 71 pitches allowing one earned run, fanning six and not allowing a walk.
Williams went 3-for-4 at the plate with the 2 RBI. Dennis also had a couple RBI on two hits for the Lady Hounds. Helmick went 2 for 2 with a two runs scored and couple walks.
Fort Madison has won six straight dating back to June 5 and is now 8-6 on the year. Dennis is 3-1 on the year with a meager 2.51 ERA.
The Lady Hounds host Davenport North tonight in a doubleheader behind Fort Madison High School.
