Old Settlers group brings in Richie Lee for Friday concert

Des Moines native highlights park concert with dinner from Lee County Pork Producers

RICHIE LEE AND THE FABULOUS 50’s will be the headliner at the 2nd of three free family concerts in Old Settlers Park on Friday, July 26th.  The Lee County Pork Producers will be serving pork loin sandwiches with side dishes, DESSERTS  and cold drinks available from 5-8:30 pm. 

Richie is from Des Moines, Iowa and is known for his tributes to Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and Jiles Richardson – “The Big Bopper”, who all perished in a plane crash 60 years ago in February 1959 in Clear Lake, Iowa.

Lee began singing almost before he could talk. At the age of 7 he won a Buddy Holly look alike lip sync. His interest in Buddy Holly began at the age of 6, listening to CD's. He began taking guitar lessons at age 11 and drums at age 12. Richie has performed on stage with Winter Dance Party Drummer Carl Bunch, Tommy Allsup, "That'll be the Day"Holly Backup singers, The Tolletts, Larry Welborn, and friend, the Legendary (“Peggy Sue” Gerron). The multi-talented members of the band keep the music true to the original hits, Other featured artists are also on his song list – The Everly Bothers, Roy Orbison, Ricky Nelson, Elvis, The Beach Boys and the Beatles.

Sheryl Decker is Chair of the 2019 Concert Season. This is the 19thyear of “Music in the Park” – first started as a variety show “thank you” at the dedication of the bandstand to the community who donated to the completion of the current bandstand. Since then, volunteers of 2000 n the Old Settlers Association have raised in excess of $400,000 for improvements – not including free labor donated to build the bandstand and install playground equipment.

All money raised from food sales allows for maintenance and improvements in the park. Sponsors of Music in the Park help pay for the entertainment.

This years’ sponsors are: FM Community Hospital, Seither & Cherry Services, Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, Connection Bank, Pilot Grove Savings Bank, Brad Randolph, Climax Molybdenum, Danny Willits, and the Rose Briggs Memorial Fund. Donations have also been received by Amigos, MidWestOne Bank, DuPont, The Hecht Family, and the Dodie Jerome Memorial.
