FORT MADISON - Fort Madison has chopped down its apple tree.

The former district logo featuring a tree with apples has been replaced effective today with a new logo design that will be phased into the district's new branding logo going forward.

According to a release from Rachel Goldstick, the district's online marketing and software specialist, the district will phase the new logo in on district materials going forward. The old logo featured the tree with apples and the words "Come Learn and Grow" under the base of the tree with Fort Madison Community School encircling the logo.

"With the recent modernization of our district website, this is the perfect time to incorporate a clean, modern look for our district logo," Goldstick wrote in the release Wednesday morning.

Goldstick said a marketing committee was formed consisting of representation from teachers, support staff, students, coaches, TLS and administration. After a few brainstorming sessions and a number of revisions, the committee agreed upon a “FM” logo to replace the former district tree logo.

She said the committee will also be looking for a new Bloodhound mascot logo in the near future to pair up with the newly released district logo but until that time the new logo will be used for all web, print, and marketing materials.

"The new logo has a simplistic design that is clearly legible across all platforms. The simplistic and bold look represents strength in unity as we continue to learn and grow together," she wrote.

Superintendent Dr. Erin Slater wrote in an email that she was pleased with the collaboration that took place in coming up with the new design.

"We are pleased to release the result of the marketing committee’s collaboration in helping to rebrand the Fort Madison Community School District with a new logo," Slater wrote.

"Collaboration such as this has been the cornerstone of the vision, mission, goals and day-to-day work in the district for the past three years. The marketing committee, who was tasked with this work, did an outstanding job in their research and results. I am excited to see the impact of increased recognition of the Fort Madison Community School District with the new FM logo."

Goldstick said the district started talking about getting a new logo last year.

"Sebastian (Seifert, district director of technology) and I started talking about this when I first started back in July of 2018, he and Erin had talked about this over the last couple of years. We concluded that if we were going to move forward with this, we would want input from our Bloodhound community."

She said the district had many drafts and the last round of meetings featured six different renderings.

"The core motivation for creating this new logo is unity.," Goldstick said. "Each building, and many of our sports and activities had their own version of a Bloodhound or the FM logo and we want to unify everyone under one logo. We are excited about having a simplistic yet strong look that stays consistent throughout the district."
