Auditor releases information for fall elections

LEE COUNTY - This year marks the first time that city and school Elections are combined. There will be no School Board Elections in September. The date for this combined Election will be Tuesday, November 5, 2019. There is however a school bond referendum election on Sept. 10 for Central Lee voters.

Candidate filing will begin Monday, August 26th. You must complete and file an Affidavit of Candidacy and a Nomination Petition. These forms are available on the Iowa Secretary of State’s website sos.iowa.gov or you can obtain them by calling the Lee County Auditor’s Office at 319-372-3705 or emailing Lee County Auditor Denise Fraise at dfraise@leecounty.org

For the Central Lee School District, you must live in the District in which you are running. District 1, 2 and 3 Seats are up for election. A candidate will need at least 37 signatures on their Nomination Petition.

For the Fort Madison School District, there are four At-Large seats up for election. A candidate will need at least 50 signatures on their Nomination Petition.

For the Keokuk School District there are four At-Large seats open and a candidate will need at least 50 signatures on their Nomination Petition.

For Southeastern Community College Board of Directors, District 4 and District 5 seats are open. You must file your papers with the Des Moines County Auditor as they are the Control County for the Community College.

Candidates must by eligible electors of the School District or Director District at the time of the Election. Petition signers must reside in the School District.

There are two Council seats up for election in the City of Donnellson. A candidate will need at least 10 signatures on their Nomination Petition.

For the City of Fort Madison, the Mayor’s seat is up for grabs requiring 21 signatures on a Nomination Petition. If you are interested in running for City Council, you have to reside in Ward 1, Ward 3 or Ward 5, which requires 10 signatures or you can run At-Large and obtain 18 signatures.

For the City of Franklin, the Mayor’s seat and five Council seats are to be filled by election. You must collect at least 10 signatures in order to have your name on the ballot.

The City of Houghton also has the Mayor seat and five Council seats. A candidate must collect at least 10 signatures.

The City of Keokuk has the Mayor seat, Ward 2, Ward 4, Ward 6 and one At-Large seat open. All these require 25 signatures.

The City of Montrose has the Mayor seat and 2 Council seats open. All these require 10 signatures.

St Paul has the Mayor seat and five Council seats open. These also require at least 10 signatures.

For the City of West Point, you will need 10 signatures to run for Mayor or one of five Council Seats.

You must be an eligible elector of the city or ward (if applicable) at the time of filing. Petition signers must reside in your ward.
