FORT MADISON - Fort Madison Police Chief Mark Rohloff issued a statement today warning residents of a number of reports of residents receiving calls automated calls indicating their social security accounts have been frozen.

Callers instruct the listener to call a number provided where they try to solicit information to defraud the victims. He said scammers can often ghost caller IDs to lend credibility to the call.

Rohloff wrote the best way to defend yourself is to refuse such calls and hang up. You can contact a published number for the institution, not the number given in the automated message. The public can also visit the Social Security Administration website to check on similar illegal activity.

He encouraged residents to check on neighbors and family who are susceptible to telephone scams and make sure they are aware of the activity.
