FAIRFIELD - Fort Madison took the first set off perennial foe Fairfield Tuesday night, but couldn't hold off the 13th-ranked Lady Trojans in the final three sets dropping the conference opener 1-3.

The Hounds rolled to a 25-18 first set win behind the hot net work of senior Jillian Wiseman, who finished the night 42 of 52 hitting with 23 kills and six of the team's eight blocks.

"We started out good the first game by serving well and Jillian was hot with nine kills in the first set," head coach Kent Bailey said after the game.

The Trojans then made some adjustments going into the second set to throw Fort Madison off their rhythm.

"Fairfield improved their blocking and bothered our hitters the rest of the evening. This led to 38 hitting errors on our part which was the story in the match."

No other Bloodhound had double digit kills as Wiseman carried the load on offense. Junior Lauren Bailey had 33 of Fort Madison's 36 assists in the match and she went a perfect 22 of 22 serving with four aces.

Junior Reyna Lampe had five kills on 19 of 31 hitting and had 10 digs and a block on the night. Junior Nadia Boeding led FMHS with 14 digs and was also perfect at the line going 13 of 13.

Senior Gracie Pumphrey was 24 of 25 serving with three aces and nine digs. Junior Kailyn Guzman was second on the team with six kills on just 22 attacks.

The Hounds were a meager 73% attacking with 106 successful of 144 attempts. Bailey said despite improvement from Saturday's 2-4 performance at the tourney in Bondurant-Farrar, he's still looking for the right combinations.

“Our players showed improvement from Saturday, but again we didn’t finish the sets. Each set we were even until 20 and Fairfield pulled away the last three due to our errors." he said.

"We are going to keep working at it and find the lineup that will get the job done.”

Fairfield senior Gracie Sever and junior Olivia Jones led the Trojans offensively. Sever was 27-33 hitting with six kills and Jones went 22-24 hitting and had 10 kills.

Senior Olivia McClaren had 28 digs and fellow senior Lily Hoskins has 24 assist for Fairfield.

Fort Madison 2-5 overall and 0-1 in the Southeast Conference is off until next Tuesday when they host Burlington in the season home opener.
