KEOKUK - Anthony Barnes captured eighth place at the Keokuk Cross Country meet on Thursday, but it was a pack of Hounds that helped seal the victory on the boys side.

The Hounds won the six-team event with 54 points, followed West Hancock with 61.

After Barnes' 8th place cross at 18:28.59, Austin Miller, Will Gager, Hayden Wolfe and Tate Settles peppered the finish line with consecutive 10th through 13th place finishes. The top-five finishes are figured in the team scoring with the lowest point total winning.

Miller finished at 19:10.33 with Gager just six seconds behind at 19:16.79. Wolfe finished at 19:20.58 and Settles came in at 19:28.35.

In the girls event, Katie Dennis finished at 22:29.71, a minute-twenty off the pace of Clark County, Mo.'s Grace Buschling.

The Lady Hounds took three of the top four spots with senior Anna Kester finishing at 23:03.36 and Maddy McVey at 23:11.83 to take 3rd and 4th.

But FMHS didn't get another lady across until Ellie Schulte crossed at 11th with a time of 24:26.82. Mylah Blanchard and Marquel Warner came in at 14th and 15th with times of 25:05.23 and 25:34.71 respectively. The 34 points were just three more than first-place Clark County.

Lily Scott finished at 26:14.85 (20th) to round out the Lady Hounds effort on the day.

For the boys, Ben Thiele finished at 20:17:01 (20th), followed right behind by Nathaniel Swigart with a time of 20:24.04 (21st).

In the junior varsity boys race Alex Steffensmeier took first with a run of 20:32.20, followed by Emmett Kruse and Cameron Shutwell with times of 22:19.16 and 23:16.62.
