Lady Hawks, HTC girls both go 3-1 at Keokuk tourney

KEOKUK - Knoxville proved to a be thorn in the side of Lee County schools at the Keokuk Invitational volleyball tournament Saturday.

Holy Trinity Catholic advanced to the championship match against the Panthers. The Crusaders fell in a close, 23-25 extended first game and then lost momentum in the second game falling 14-21 to surrender the title.

The Crusaders knocked off Keokuk 21-17, 21-6, and then downed Louisa-Muscatine 21-5, 21-11 before needing a tiebreaker to get past Burlington Notre Dame 21-17, 18-21, and 15-12 to set up the title match.

A pool play loss to Knoxville bumped the Central Lee Lady Hawks from a shot at the championship against Holy Trinity.

The Lady Hawks fell early in the contest 16-21 in the first game, but then came flying back with a 21-11 win over the eventual tournament champions before falling 7-15 in the tiebreaker.

Central Lee then went on to knock off New London in a see-saw match with the Hawks winning the first game 21-13, then falling 14-21 in the second, before winning an extended tie-break 1614.

The Hawks then downed Columbus Junction and Keokuk in two games each to round out the day.

Mya Merschman had 20 kills on the day for Central Lee including an 18-19 game against New London where she had nine kills and six blocks.

Kaylynn Summers went 18 of 18 hitting against New London with four kills and four blocks. Abby Wellman was 19 of 22 hitting against the Tigers with seven kills, a block, and 10 digs. Zoey Eschman had 14 assists and was 7 of 7 serving in that match. Chloe Weber had 15 digs.

For the Crusaders, Kassi Randolph was 43 of 45 attacking with 24 kills and 33 assists on the day. She also was 29-30 serving, had 22 digs, and five blocks.

Claire Pothitakis was 60-71 attacking with 26 kills and had two blocks. Maille Sheerin went 35-38 serving on the day with nine aces and 18 digs.

Bailey Hellweg had 33 assists and went 23-27 serving with eight aces.

Both teams play in the Holy Trinity Classic starting at 4 p.m. Monday at Shottenkirk Gym.
