Fort Madison boys 1st, girls 2nd at Washington

WASHINGTON - The Fort Madison Bloodhound boys cross country team continues lofty performances half way through the fall season.

At Tuesday's Washington Invitational, the Hounds had their five scoring runners finish in the top 15 to take first place in the team scoring with a 52, just one point ahead of Fairfield.

Sophomore Will Gager took the top spot for the Bloodhounds with an 18:53.37 at the Washington Country Club 5K, good enough for 5th place in the field. Anthony Barnes, a junior came in at 19:21.92 good enough for 8th place overall. Hayden Wolfe, also a sophomore, was the third Bloodhound to finish in the top 10 with a mark of 19:42.15 (10th).

Freshman Tate Settles and sophomore Austin Miller were 14th and 15th overall at 20:02.47 and 20:21.00 to round out the scoring for Fort Madison. The top five place finishes for each school are added up for a team total.

In the girls run Fort Madison finished second as a team with 84 points behind the juggernaut that is Mt. Pleasant that had just 22 points, pulling in seven of the top 10 times of the day.

The Bloodhounds Katie Dennis took 5th place with a 23:03.43. The next Lady Hound across was Anna Kester who finished at 24:03.42, good enough for 13th overall and then Maddy McVey who crossed in 15th place with a time of 24:30.53.

A couple of freshman Lauren Otte and Mylah Blanchard were 25th and 26th overall with times of 26:22.34 and 26:32.71.. Lily Scott and Marquel were 30th and 31st overall. Brandy Walker was 39th and Rachel Hellman was 47th.

Back at the boys high school run, junior Alex Steffensmeier was 17th overall at 20:32.09 followed by Ben Thele who crossed the line at 21:47.93 (32nd), Emmett Kruse, 22:10.96 (35th), Nathanial Swigart (44th), Owen Kruse (51st), and Cameron Shutwell (54th).

The Fort Madison boys also won the junior high 2 mile run with 39 points. Eighth-grader Carson Rashid won the even with a run of 11:35.17. Nathan Bower, Leif Boeding and Aiden Mitchell finished 7th-9th with times as 12:36.32, 12:40.23 and 12:44.62.

John Contrell wrapped up the scoring runners for the Little Hounds with a time of 13:08.65 (14th) Jacob Shottenkirk was 15th at 13:10.90 and Ben Romatowski was 17th at 13:13.73.

Peyton Lambert finished 22nd, Connor Dennis was 30th overall, Oliver Santiago was 59th overall, Damon Hunter raced to a 73rd place finish and Ethan Huffman crossed at 20:47.60.

The middle school girls took 2nd place led by Paetyn Weigand finishing second overall with a time of 13:49.14. Allison Lamb earned 6th with a time of 14:19.08 and Delanee Seay and Hailey Kemper rounded out the top 10 with a 9th and 10th place finish.

Jordyn Burch was 20th overall followed by Alexa Walz (25), Jojo Vincent (28), Lillian Gelsthorpe (30th), and Bella Estrada (31).
