HTC second at Mt. Pleasant tourney; Central Lee splits

Lady Hawks open Class 3A Region 8 play on Oct. 23 at West Burlington against Lady Falcons

MT. PLEASANT - Holy Trinity Catholic lost in a 13-15 tiebreaker surrendering the championship of Saturday's Mt. Pleasant Invitational to Burlington Notre Dame.

The Crusaders swept through pool play with two-game sweeps of Pekin 25-8, 25-22, Mt. Pleasant 25-22, 25-13, and Central Lee 25-11, 25-23, before falling in the tiebreaker to the Nikes 25-23, 21-25, 13-15.

The Class 1A 8th-rated Crusaders were led at the net by sophomore Kassi Randolph and junior Claire Pothitakis who both had 28 kills on the day. Pothitakis was 94-108 hitting and Randolph was 68-74 attacking. Senior Avery Hopper and freshman Brooke Mueller each had 18 kills on the day.

Bailey Hellweg and Randolph paced HTC in assists with 45 and 40 respectively. Maille Sheerin was 43-44 serving with six aces on the day.

The Crusaders are 23-8 on the year.

Central Lee beat Pekin 25-11, 25-9 and Mt. Pleasant 25-15, 25-16 and lost to HTC, and Burlington Notre Dame in three games 25-18, 14-25, 10-15.

Mya Merschman had 39 kills on the day to lead Central Lee. Abby Wellman was 32 of 34 serving with four aces and had 33 digs. Chloe Weber went 23 of 24 serving with 24 digs for the Lady Hawks.

Central Lee will host the Crusaders on Tuesday night before Class 3A Region 8 post season play kicks off Oct. 23 against West Burlington with the winner going up against No. 2 West Liberty on Oct. 29 at West Liberty.

The championship match for the right to go to state out of that region will be played Nov. 4 at Washington High School.

Holy Trinity will start post season action on Oct. 28 facing the winner of Winfield-Mt. Union/Burlington Notre Dame at Shottenkirk Gymnasium in Fort Madison. After the clash with Central Lee Tuesday, the Crusaders wrap up the regular season at the Mediapolis Invitational on Thursday.

Mediapolis is currently No. 2 in Class 2A and sports a sparkling 30-1 record with their only lost on Saturday to Iowa City Liberty at the Pella Invitational. They've lost just six games all year.
